Twin Cities news media: Co-sponsor a St. Paul intern

Twin Cities news media! The boards of the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists and ThreeSixty Journalism are proud to present recent University of St. Thomas grad Safiya Mohamed as this summer’s St. Paul Jaycees Foundation intern. Host her to cover St. Paul, and we’ll cover at least 1/2 the cost: https://forms.office.com/r/rGpPSiMxum

As you may know, the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists and ThreeSixty Journalism, a St. Paul nonprofit dedicated to youth training and diversity in media, have once again been awarded $2,500 from the St. Paul Jaycees Charitable Foundation to be put toward hosting a college intern at a Twin Cities news outlet this summer, with the goal of furthering non-crime coverage of St. Paul.

ThreeSixty has selected Safiya Mohamed, a recent graduate of St. Thomas University, as a preferred applicant for summer 2025. Media outlets are now invited to apply for the opportunity to host Ms. Mohamed as a summer intern. The application is now live and will close on April 16.

Whether or not a media outlet can provide some level of matching funds will be taken into consideration, but please apply even if you cannot offer a $2,500 match this summer.

Preference will be given to media outlets that can provide an appropriate level of mentorship, guidance and in-person supervision at least two or three times per week. Media selection will be conducted by Ms. Mohamed in consultation with staff of ThreeSixty Journalism.

Please review:

Ms. Mohamed’s resume on LinkedIn.

Ms. Mohamed’s work for TommieMedia.

Ms. Mohamed’s work for ThreeSixty Journalism (while in high school).

Project-based reporting is not required (but recommended!). Last summer, Gwynnevere Vang, an undergraduate at St. Thomas, covered community news for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Two summers ago, recent Macalester College graduate Isabel Saavedra-Weis spent her summer focused on reparations work unfolding in and around the city.

Among the expectations:

— A majority of the student’s summer reporting (51%+) must be devoted to non-crime news specific to St. Paul.

— Matching funds are strongly encouraged but not required.

– Preference will be given to media outlets offering strong supervision and in-person work.

— The internship may be full- or part-time.
