EVENT: Inaugural #MNSPJchat

Join the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists this Friday, November 30 at noon for our first ever virtual brown bag lunch.  Update – the live event is finished, but you can watch the entire discussion below.

Tune in live on YouTube and Twitter for a lunch-time discussion on the Hat Tip. When should news organizations give credit to bloggers, competitors, readers or others for scoops and story leads? When and how should reporters acknowledge that others’ reporting played a role in their stories? Is it an ethical issue — or just a good professional courtesy?

We’ll be on the air live with three web-savvy journalists as our panel: MinnPost media critic David Brauer, GigaOM senior writer Matthew Ingram, and Minnesota Public Radio online news editor Melanie Sommer. MPR’s Jon Collins will moderate the conversation, and we’ll share questions and comments from you via Twitter. (Use the hashtag #MNSPJchat.)

Check back here Friday just before noon for a link to the YouTube broadcast, or check the #MNSPJchat hashtag on Twitter.

About the panel:

David Brauer (@dbrauer) has covered Minnesota media for MinnPost since
2007. He’s been a reporter for local alt-weeklies and magazines, a
community newspaper editor, a radio talk show host and a national
freelancer. He likes readers and tipsters.

Matthew Ingram (@mathewi) is a senior writer at GigaOM and a former
blogger and columnist with The Globe and Mail, a large daily newspaper
based in Toronto. He’s been writing about business and technology for
about 10 years. He was also the paper’s online Communities Editor,
which meant helping writers and editors figure out how to use social
media tools to connect with readers about the stories they wrote.

Melanie Sommer (@melsommer) joined Minnesota Public Radio in 1995, as
a manager of Minnesota Public Radio’s news department. She became one
of Minnesota Public Radio’s two online news editors in November 2000.
She came to Minnesota Public Radio from Wisconsin Public Radio in
Madison, Wisconsin, where she worked for eight years as morning host
and news anchor, and was news director for two years.

About the moderator:

Jon Collins (@Rhubarbarism) is an online reporter for MPR News. His
duties include filing breaking news and working on enterprise stories.
Before joining MPR, Collins was an editor and reporter at the
Minnesota Independent. He was also the editor of the Southwest
Minneapolis Patch and a legislative correspondent for the American
Consolidated newspaper chain in northeast Minnesota. Jon received
degrees in history and journalism from the University of Minnesota,
where he also worked as a projects reporter for the Minnesota Daily.
He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and
Investigative Reporters and Editors.
