2021 Page One Awards Highlight Journalism During Exceptional Year
Coverage of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the statewide impact of COVID-19 dominated the list of prize-winning entries in the 2021 Page One Awards from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists (MNSPJ).
Libor Jany of the Star Tribune was named Journalist of the Year for his coverage of the Floyd killing, which judges lauded for showcasing Jany’s skill with both breaking news and exposing the history of policing in the city’s Third Precinct.
Story of the Year honors went to the staff of the Star Tribune for pandemic coverage including a special section depicting COVID-19 through the eyes of six Minnesotans and an in-depth look at one of the hardest hit nursing homes in the state.
The award for Best Use of Public Records went to A.J. Lagoe, Brandon Stahl, Steve Eckert and Gary Knox of KARE 11 for reporting on a suspicious pattern of inmate deaths in Minnesota, work that judges called “an outstanding example on how documentation can expose problems that spur action.”
Journalists from the Los Angeles Press Club judged this year’s contest. Entries were published or broadcast during 2020 in newspaper, magazine, television, radio, online and photography divisions. Click links below to see all the winners by category.

Plaques and certificates will be distributed in September at an event at Roseville’s Central Park. More details will be available closer to the event date.
